Sara Payne

Tutor

Sara’s previous varied experience over several decades has been mainly within the 3rd sector. She has extensive experience supporting individuals through her previous jobs. She worked as a DWP Employment Advisor; her role was to support customers in overcoming individual barriers into employment. Sara also worked as a Volunteer Coordinator, at Wellbeing for All; a Cardiff based drug and alcohol service that provided mental health and substance misuse support. Her role was to support and find the potential of her clients to embark into a volunteer post of employment, but has over the decades had experienced employment within the media sector as well, with some exciting roles such as a Production Coordinator, filming in Africa.

Sara is an accredited Couple’s Counsellor and is a registered member of the BACP. She pursued and successfully achieved a BSc (First Class Hons) Systemic Counselling and Psychotherapy at the Family Institute, University of South Wales; and is now continuing to study on the 2nd year of her Post Graduate Diploma with a view to pursuing her Masters in Systemic Family therapy.

Sara has also recently completed a certificate in PCET at Cardiff Metropolitan University.
At present Sara volunteers as a counsellor in the Systemic family Clinic at Action for Children and does some private practice from time to time.

Sara has a passion for self-development and has a strong belief that everyone has the right for change if they wish so. She has always loved the quote from Nathaniel Branden “The first step towards change is awareness. The second step is acceptance.”; as it illustrates brilliantly the importance of how change can lead to new beginning and personal growth, and so much more potentially.

My origin story sits within working environments, such as NHS mental health services, social
work practice, since 2010 I have continually developed my interest in the field of systemic
psychotherapy. Achieving a master 2017 and becoming a systemic supervisor 2023. I have
an interest in relational phenomenology, such as how we live and experience our worlds in
relation to others. Exploring our interactions, reactions, and actions, enable a process to
continually challenge our internalised and external beliefs. Through dialogues and
conversation, we can find alternative ways of learning and creating change through reflective
practice and reflexivity.
My approach is to practice and those I collaborate with, is to be inclusive and considerate to
the needs of the other. To recognise and build on people’s strengths, resilience, and
relational resources. Working in partnership ‘with’ and remain sensitive to diverse forms of
relationships, beliefs, and cultures.
